How to Select Drapery: dvd Interior Design
Drapery and roman shades are more than just window coverings; they are essential elements that can transform the look and feel of your home. With countless fabric options, styles, and hardware choices, selecting the perfect window treatment can be overwhelming.
This comprehensive guide will walk you through the key considerations when choosing drapery or roman shades, helping you create a stylish and functional space.
Important things to consider when buying drapery
Consider your needs. What are your primary goals for your drapery? Do you need it to block out light, provide privacy, or simply add a decorative touch? Once you know what you need, you can start to narrow down your options.
Choose the right fabric. Fabric is one of the most important factors to consider when selecting drapery. The weight and texture of the fabric will affect how the drapery hangs and how much light it blocks. For example, heavy fabrics like velvet or damask are ideal for blocking out light and providing privacy, while lighter fabrics like linen or cotton are better suited for letting in light and creating a more airy feel.
Select the right style. There are many different drapery styles to choose from, including pinch pleat, grommet top, and tab top. The style you choose will depend on the overall style of your room and your personal preferences.
Consider the hardware. Drapery hardware is just as important as the fabric and style of the drapery itself. The right hardware will ensure that your drapery hangs properly and looks its best. When choosing hardware, be sure to consider the weight of the fabric and the style of the drapery.
Types of shades for living rooms, bedrooms, and more.
Relaxed Roman Shade
Roman shades are an excellent alternative to blinds or drapes. The shades help soften a window's harsh lines while also helping control light and heat. Relaxed Roman shades are characterized by the curvature of their bottoms. These shades are an ideal fit for traditional-style rooms or those packed with feminine decor.
Flat Roman Shades
Flat Roman shades are the most common style of Roman shades due to their ability to work with both masculine and feminine spaces, as well as a wide array of design aesthetics. They're characterized by the straight edge along the bottom of the fabric.

The Five Most Popular Drapery Styles A Guide to Choosing the Right Style for Your Home
There are many different types of drapery, each with its unique look and feel. To help you choose the right style for your home, I am sharing the top five most popular styles:
Inverted Pleat
Inverted pleat drapes are a classic and timeless style that is perfect for traditional and formal homes. They are created by folding the fabric in an inverted V-shape, which creates a clean and modern look.
2. Cartridge Pleat
Cartridge pleat drapes are a more formal style of drapery that is perfect for traditional and transitional homes. They are created by folding the fabric in a rounded shape, which creates a luxurious and elegant look.
3. Double & Triple Pinch Pleats
Double/triple pinch pleat drapes are a versatile style of drapery that can be used in a variety of homes. They are created by folding the fabric in a series of small pinches, which creates a tailored and sophisticated look.
4. Euro Pinch Pleat
Euro pinch pleat drapes are a more contemporary style of drapery that is perfect for modern and transitional homes. They are created by folding the fabric in a series of large pinches and with a smaller spacing between the pinches, which creates a clean and streamlined look.
5. Goblet Pleat
Goblet pleat drapes are a dramatic style of drapery that is perfect for formal and transitional homes. They are created by folding the fabric in a deep and rounded shape, which creates a dramatic and luxurious look.
I use three of these styles in my home: inverted pleats, cartridge pleats, and double pinch pleats. I find that these styles are the most versatile and can be used in a variety of rooms.
With so many different styles and options to choose from, you are sure to find the perfect drapery for your home.

Understanding Drapery Hardware: A Guide to Stylish Window Treatments
Drapery hardware, often an overlooked aspect of window treatments, plays a significant role in enhancing the overall look and feel of your windows. When selecting drapery rods, consider those with returns that curve along their ends, creating a seamless and tailored architectural touch.
For 2024, the trend leans toward a "Quiet Luxury" aesthetic, emphasizing simplicity and elegance. My preferred choice is metal poles with French Elbow returns, offering a refined and timeless appeal. If the French Elbow option exceeds your budget, metal poles with simple finials serve as a stylish alternative.
Making Your Drapes Look Expensive: Simple Secrets for a Luxurious Look: Choose high-quality fabrics: The quality of the fabric significantly impacts the overall appearance of your drapes. Opt for natural fibers like linen, cotton, or silk for a luxurious touch.
Consider layering: Layering sheer curtains over solid drapes adds depth and dimension to your windows, creating a visually appealing effect.
Accessorize with trim, tassels or tiebacks: Tassels and tiebacks provide a finishing touch to your drapes, adding a touch of whimsy and sophistication.
Thoughts on Drapery Lengths
The term "break" refers to when the bottom of a drapery panel meets the floor.
High-traffic rooms with children and pets are best fit for a 1/4-inch break which leaves the bottom hem of the panel slightly raised above the floor. This type of break makes everyday cleaning much easier since the hem never comes into direct contact with the ground.
Formal spaces with low traffic are ideal for puddled drapery breaks in which extra fabric is added along the bottom.
With a little planning, you can choose drapery that will transform your windows and elevate the style of your entire room.
WHAT TYPE OF CURTAIN IS BEST FOR A LIVING ROOM?
When choosing fabric for a living room curtain, itโs really down to what overarching style you want to create in the space. For more traditional rooms, make a traditional choice: heavy velvet will channel a luxurious feel in large, high-ceilinged living rooms, but for a more contemporary feel, choose lightweight alternatives.
โFor a timeless window dressing solution that feels stylish and considered, Iโd recommend opting for a lightweight, natural material such as a cotton/linen blend. I find this gives a relaxed and versatile look to the room that will stand the test of time. It is best to steer away from man-made fabrics such as polyester as these can often have a sheen that feels low quality.โ
Key Considerations for Living Room Curtains:
Fabric Material: Lightweight natural materials like cotton-linen blends offer a timeless and versatile look that suits various dรฉcor styles. Avoid man-made fabrics like polyester, as their sheen can detract from the overall quality.
Consider the weight of the fabric. Choose a fabric drape that complements the desired ambiance. Heavy drapes create a formal and sophisticated feel, while lighter drapes provide a more relaxed and casual atmosphere.
Light Control: Consider the amount of natural light desired in the living room. Blackout curtains offer complete light control, while sheer curtains allow for diffused light and maintain a bright and airy feel.
Pattern and Color: Select patterns and colors that harmonize with the existing dรฉcor and color scheme of the living room. Neutral tones like beige, white, or gray provide a versatile base, while bolder patterns and colors can add visual interest and personality.
Length: Floor-length curtains create a sense of elegance and grandeur, particularly in large living rooms. Shorter curtains offer a more casual and relaxed look.
Hardware: Choose drapery hardware that complements the overall style of the curtains and the living room. Metal rods with French Elbow returns exude a refined and timeless appeal, while wooden rods provide a warmer and more traditional aesthetic.
